As part of Science Week, organized by Madrid's Regional Government in November every year, the Facultad de Informática organizes open days targeting secondary school students.
The open days are designed to publicize the research undertaken at the Facultad de Informática, also giving students the chance to visit Facultad de Informática facilities and get a feel of everyday life on the campus.
Dates: 17 and 18 November 2011.
Duration of the visit: 2 hours.
Open days target groups of at most 30 upper secondary school students. Two visits will be run simultaneously. Groups larger than 30 will be divided into two, and each group must be accompanied by a tutor/monitor.
The visit will include a tour of the Computing History Museum, and outstanding research facilities at our campus.

The visit to the museum is designed to illustrate the impact of technological progress through a guided tour of the exhibition, including a dissected personal computer and an explanation of its components and how it works. There is also an instructive display about the evolution of the different aspects of computing: technology, programming languages, operating systems, the Internet..., also displaying objects of key historical importance in this evolution.
The tour will include a short talk about the structure of Magerit (Spain's second-largest supercomputer and number 136 in the world according to the July 2011 TOP500 list), explaining its parts and how they interact. There will be an illustration of the basic units of the computer (blades), different node types, and trends in the field of supercomputer architecture.
The talk will give an overview of the importance of supercomputing in scientific development, offering real examples of scientific progress driven by supercomputing and projects that are using or have used the Magerit supercomputer.
Then there will be a visit to the machine room, where the operation and particularities of the Magerit supercomputer will be explained, discussing all its components: fibre optic communications, high reliability and high performance disk arrays, as well as high density integrated computing nodes.
