Master in Advanced Computing for Science and Engineering

Outline

The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid's Master in Advanced Computing for Science and Engineering is an interdepartmental degree supported by Madrid's Supercomputing and Visualization Centre (CeSViMa). The master's degree programme is part of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid Facultad de Informática's postgraduate course offering.

To qualify for the degree of Master in Advanced Computing for Science and Engineering, students should earn 60 ECTS credits, of which 30 ECTS credits are for compulsory subjects, 9 ECTS credits are for technical or scientific seminars, 6 ECTS are for optional subjects associated with application modules, and 15 ECTS credits are associated with the master's degree final project.

The aim of the master's degree is to train qualified researchers to join research centres or industry (at companies with research or advanced development laboratories or centres) and provide a link between experts in the respective scientific or engineering domain and the creators and designers of advanced information technology tools.

To do this, we set out to train specialists with a firm grounding in the use of advanced computing facilities and with the required knowledge of problem simulation, analysis and modelling in the chosen application field. This training will qualify students to develop new and sophisticated tools at the cutting edge of current technological development.

A total of 25 places are now on offer. This master's degree targets two different profiles. The first profile corresponds to ICT graduates looking to further their technical knowledge of high-performance computing, modelling and simulation,  analysis and visualization, and their application to different areas within the field of science or engineering. The second profile fits graduates from other branches of engineering or in pure or experimental science looking to become proficient in the use of large computing infrastructures and advanced techniques for simulating and analysing problems in their branch of knowledge.

This master's degree will be taught entirely in English, and advanced seminars will be given by internationally reputed guest lecturers. The master's degree also includes the development of application modules that will be held jointly with research laboratories specializing in different disciplines, leading R&D companies or associated research centres.

The Master in Advanced Computing for Science and Engineering provides the foundation for the UPM's Doctorate in Advanced Computing for Science and Engineering.
The subjects are divided into three main modules, plus a package of seminars and the master's degree final project. Students are required to earn 60 ECTS that they will be able to choose from a total of 73-78 ECTS (depending on the number of seminars offered). These credits are distributed as follows:

Prospective students

The Master in Advanced Computing for Science and Engineering targets graduates and practitioners in the field of engineering, experimental science and mathematics. The programme also targets students from multidisciplinary studies, like bioinformatics, computational neuroscience or similar.
