The PhD in Artificial Intelligence is an adaptation to the provisions of Royal Decree 99/2011 of the same name program verified in accordance with Royal Decree 1393/2007 of the Ministry of Education Universities Council. This PhD program is awarded with a Ministry of Education Quality Mention distinction for the 2011-12 to 2013-14 academic years.
The aim of the UPM's PhD in Artificial Intelligence is to familiarize students of computational science and computing technology with research techniques and empower them to solve new scientific and technological problems through artificial intelligence research. Apart from this overall aim, the program has an additional goal proper to the content and purpose of the degree, and the program is driven by the innovate to research + research to innovate binomial. The first aim suggests innovative lines of research that are able to combine specialized training with the creativity underlying original, active and fertile research paths. The second targets creativity in research-driven problem-solving.
This process will end with students producing and defending a PhD thesis.
The objectives of the PhD program are to:
Train a core of people that qualified to solve scientific and technological problems in the field of artificial intelligence by conducting independent and original research that move forward the frontiers of knowledge.
Train researchers that know how to disseminate the results of their research through peer-reviewed scientific publications with a recognized impact factor.
Offer society a number of people qualified to prepare, evaluate and/or criticize new scientific research and/or technological development proposals in the field of artificial intelligence.
Train researchers able to take up careers, like postdoctoral researcher, university lecturer, institute or industry researcher, requiring doctoral qualifications or other careers in the technological field, requiring creativity, and leadership and management skills.
Train researchers that appreciate the meaning of science as a profession and its ethical implications for society.
And in order to achieve it, the program will focus on the candidate's acquisition of the basic competences and abilities and personal skills patterned by current legislation, and the program specific competences.
The UPM's PhD in Artificial Intelligence targets students interested in attaining the above objectives. More precisely, it targets students interested in learning more about research techniques for scientific and technological problem solving through artificial intelligence research.
To guide prospective PhD students about features that are considered suitable to begin PhD studies, it will be indicated below a brief description of the skills, background knowledge, languages to be used in the training process and the required level at them , etc. that, in general, are considered appropriate for those people who are beginning PhD studies in the Program:
Skills:
Reading comprehension.
Good spoken and written communication.
Interest in research in the area of Artificial Intelligence.
Analytical and creative ability in finding solutions to specific problems.
Observation skills, initiative and willingness to work as a team.
Background knowledge:
The program is organized around research training-not structured in ECTS-and includes both co-curricular training and specific research area of its own.
It will be developed through six research lines:
Line 1: applications of artificial intelligence
Line 2: natural computing
Line 3: linguistic engineering
Line 4: computational Intelligence
Line 5: Computational and robotics perception
Line 6: knowledge representation and reasoning
These lines are developed by professors and researchers seconded to active research groups that develop projects of R & D financed by public and competitive calls of the National Plan and the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Community. They are also financed by private and public entities under contracts or research agreements. This obtained funding ensures the program internationalization and doctoral students mobility.
