Universidad Politécnica de Madrid Bologna-compliant undergraduate degree students must certify that they have a Level B2 English language proficiency. For this purpose, the UPM Governance Council has set up two procedures:
Submitting a certificate issued by an external certification agency
Taking an internal test set by the Department of Applied Linguistics
To facilitate the management and administration of this certification process, a registration period shall be opened, during which all interested students that are enrolled for one of the new Bologna-compliant degrees can apply for certification. The certification process will be held twice every academic year. The registration period for the November and March processes will open in October and February, respectively.
This option is open to students that are possession of a certificate issued by a recognized certification agency (see below).
Students have to register for the process and then submit a certified photocopy of the respective certificate as and when specified. School/College Registries are qualified to certify documents. All the certificates issued by recognized certification agencies usually state the CEFR for languages equivalence. Certificates that do not state the CEFR for languages equivalence shall not be accepted. If this is unclear, students are advised to opt for internal certification.
There follows a list of institutions and certificates that are accepted as they certify B2 or higher proficiency levels.
University of Cambridge ESOL examinations:
First Certificate (CAE), Advanced (CAE) and Proficiency (CPE)
IELTS: 5.5-9.0
Trinity College London:
Integrated Skills in English examinations (ISE): ISE II and ISE III
Graded Examinations in Spoken English (GESE): Grade 7-10
TOEIC: Listening and Reading: 785-990
TOEFL IBT (Internet-based Test): 87-120
Official Language Schools:
1998 curriculum (RD 967/1988): 4th year passed
2006 curriculum (RD 1629/2006): 5th year passed
Students that are not in possession of a recognized certificate shall have to opt for internal certification. In this case, students have to register and sit a test that will be held at the end of the registration period. Students will not be allowed to take the test more than four times.
At the end of the registration period, all the students that applied for certification will be served notice of the date, time and place where the test is to be held at their school or college. The test will be held in November for students that registered in October and March for students that registered in February.
Students that opt for internal certification will take a test. At the end of the process, the results will be published. Internal certification is effective and valid for the purposes of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid only.
The procedure to be followed by students interested in applying for certification is as follows:
Log into Politécnica Virtual > Training > English level > Admission for B2 Certification.
Select and mark preferred option: Internal certification or External certification.
You will receive a confirmation email at your "studentname"@upm.es account. Reception of this email confirms that you have registered correctly.
At the end of the registration period, the list of admitted candidates, as well as the date, time and place at which certification is to be held will be conveniently posted.
Students that are opting for the internal certification process should take the test.
Students that are opting for the external certification procedure should hand in the credentials.
Students that have NOT correctly registered for certification shall not be admitted to the process.
